I was hesitant to purchase such an expensive program for my four-year-old son, but he was struggling with every aspect of his perk "lessons." He could barely count to ten, mis-identified shapes, etc., and never wanted to "do school." I assumed he wasn't ready and was planning to wait. A friend suggested I look over RightStart Math. I liked that it was all hands-on and had lots of manipulatives. The sample lessons looked fun and challenging. I also looked over Saxon, but the amount of Parent Prep time seemed overwhelming. Several friends confirmed this, and I looked more closely at Level A of RightStart. It was really only the cost holding me back. After a few more weeks of struggling with my son, I decided to take the plunge.
I have never been more pleased with a math program. We take it really slow, only completing one to three lessons a week. We are currently on Lesson 18, and my four year old is mentally computing three number addition combinations! I am always surprised when he comes to me and says, "Mama! Did you know that 2+1+3=6?" And we are only on Lesson 18! Since it is a non-consumable text, I can use the program with my younger children as well.
I bought all the suggested extras, and although we haven't used them yet in the lessons, all my children enjoy using the materials during school time. My only complaint is that I wish it had been better stated how much photocopying was required for Level A. After seeing the amount I went back and ordered Appendix A and B, but then I had to pay an additional shipping charge. With four kids six and under, I do not have the time to photocopy 50 to 100 pages on different colors of cardstock. The appendix copies are only $10, I just wish they had better explained how necessary they were in the description. Or made it part of the set and charged $10 more.
I recommend RightStart Math to every family I know looking for a high quality math program. It was a priceless investment for us.

We briefly tried Singapore Early Bird Math with my oldest last spring and I quickly realized that my son needed a more hands on, less workbook style program (for everything - not just math) that required less fleshing out from me. I resorted back to our tried and true math card games and then a friend suggested RSM. We love this program! It is everything Math should be and so easy to use. Not only did my son take off with this math program, he asks to do math first every day! I am amazed at how my own math skills have improved. Not that I was bad in math before but I used to have to use paper for everything… I can’t believe how much more math I do in my head now. I can’t wait to use the older programs.
My kindergarten son completed A mid year and started on B after the holidays. He amazes everyone with his math skills… my in-laws were floored when he correctly counted their change in his head. My preschool aged daughter has recently shown an interest in math and we have started A with her. She is showing the same great understanding of math and is enjoying it as much as her brother. Even my 2 year old can be heard signing "Yellow is the Sun." I am so glad we found RSM at the beginning of home school experience. It is the one subject I am 100% we will not be shopping around for in the future! Thank you Right Start Math.

My husband and I are extremely pleased with the Level A starter kit. We went into this year as nervous novices. The straightforward lessons have been tremendously empowering for us as teachers. Our children, ages 5 and 6, love their math lessons, and would happily do more then we are able to each day. Our home is full of excitement about learning math...who would have guessed!
