    Math success made easy

This math program is outstanding in two respects: 1. I am able to teach the concepts even though I am terrified of Math and have dismal math skills even though I earned a BA from a large University 2. My son has learned & enjoyed RightStart Math - I believe the product is the reason he chooses math as his favorite subject!

    Only program I use

This is the only homeschool math program I have used and I absolutely love it. The program just makes sense. My 6yo has learned the fundamentals and is doing great with mental math. The manual is easy to follow and there is very little prep work. We plan to continue using Rightstart Math. Thanks!

Hello Dr. Cotter, I am a homeschooler up in the Alaskan bush. I am teaching my Down Syndrome 11 yo son math with RightStart math. I heard about your program through another mother with a DS child who was having success using it. I will confess that I have always found math to be a difficult subject, probably because I did not have it taught to me via the right avenues. I find your program easy to understand if different from what I have ever seen before. The use of the abacus, finger counting, tally sticks etc. are a novel idea and something my son caught on to immediately. I do find I have to really prepare and read quite extensively before I present a concept to him, one cannot "fly blind" with this program, which is probably true with any method but this one has a unique perspective and I am hoping that by the end of it we will both have learned some good math tools. We started last summer since we take no breaks except for trips and week ends, and are now on lesson 18, we are going into the partitioning lessons. He is finding these a bit abstract but I think that on the whole he is grasping it. My hope is that he will be able to apply these concepts to his everyday activities in time. Thank you for your unique perspective and the thought and insight you have put into this method. Blessings your way from snowy Alaska!

    RightStart Math B
    Meredith (Unknown) 11/18/2008 3:43 PM
My daughter started using RightStart level B in first grade, and we absolutely love it! She has a logic and reasoning gap which makes her very emotional when she gets frustrated. I found that Right Start's approach to learning, which is gentle, and has a lot of review was very good for her. She has been able to work through her frustrations more easily, and with less tears! When she gets frustrated, I just ask her to do what she knows to do: use the abacus and work out the problem with her fingers, not just in her head. And lo and behold, every time, it works out wonderfully! We found that when she tries to do things on her own, without the tools is when she has the most difficulty. We always pull out the abacus and go back over the problems she missed on her worksheets. It's marvelous! I'm now doing level A with my son who just started Kindergarten, and because of RightStart, my children love math! Thank you!!!

    Understanding, not memorization
    (Unknown) 11/18/2008 11:34 AM
I was homeschooled, and the program we used was okay, but the emphasis was on memorizing math facts. As an adult, I was forced to work out my own strategies for mental math, which, it turns out, are very much like the ones offered in this program. I love that my daughter is learning how to solve problems; rather than simply memorizing 2 and 2 are 4, she understands and can work it out for herself.
